You can get a safe and effective henna hair dye from us along with a range of colour safe shampoo and conditioner options to keep your colour fresher for longer. Your eco friendly hair care shopping experience with us is rounded out with a range of plastic free hair ties made with organic cotton and rubber plus brushes and combs made with bamboo. What defines natural hair care?

It’s what brands leave out of their hair products that makes them natural? The biggest one is SLS. Sulfate Free Shampoo doesn’t include sodium lauryl sulfate or other sulphates. SLS is a foaming agent used in a lot of commercial hair products but it is known to be an irritant. It can cause skin itchiness, rashes and swelling, it can also irritate the eyes, not just the skin, and in more severe cases of sensitivities and allergies, headaches, dizziness and hormone disruption and it can be absorbed by the skin.

From a cosmetic perspective, it strips your hair of natural oils and gives dull and frizzy hair, which then requires a silicone based conditioner to coat the hair shaft. You can easily wash your hair with a natural product and not need to coat your hair.

There’s no synthetic fragrances in the hair care range in our store, so those with sensitive skin and sensitive noses don’t need to be concerned about headaches or rashes from using the natural hair products in our store.

When it comes to preservatives, in adult products only, we do allow a small amount of lab derived preservatives to keep the cost down in many products in the range. In a wash off, for an adult, it’s a personal choice and all our ingredients are disclosed on each product in our hair range. The risk of bacteria growing in a water based product kept in a humid environment is too great for us not to take this one seriously.

Do you have any natural hair products without coconut in them?

It is rare, but we do have a handful of customers that have allergies to coconut derivatives. In most natural hair products, SLS and lab derived surfactants are replaced with coconut oil based alternatives. We are yet to find a shampoo/conditioner combo without these derivatives that meet the rest of our criteria.

Is there a detox period when I swap between commercial and natural hair products?

For some people, yes. This is mainly due to SLS based cleansers stripping the natural oils from your hair and then artificially being put back with silicone coatings in your conditioner. Allow some time for the natural oils to come back into your hair before giving up on your natural swap. You can even give this a hurry up by using natural oils like coconut oil, argan oil or castor oil as a hair mask and then wash out.
