In mainstream products, you will usually find Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) in your shampoo and silicones in your conditioner. The SLS strips your hair of dirt, grime and your natural oils and then the conditioner coats the hair. This is why we use sulfate free shampoo. The natural alternatives don’t do that. Your natural oils will largely stay in place after cleansing your hair, leaving your natural hair conditioner to soften, hydrate and protect the hair, not coat it with a silicone.
Our conditioner range is available in traditional liquid forms, bars, leave ins and nourishing treatments for damaged hair. Choose from our extensive range to suit your hair type.
The best natural conditioner for curly hair
Out of all the hair types, conditioner and curly hair are the most important. Curly hair is often dry and frizzy and not only does the conditioner add moisture to your hair, but it helps to define curls. For really curly hair, a cowash, or ‘conditioner wash’ is often used instead of the shampoo/conditioner combination. You can get a cowash in bar form from Ethique and a liquid version from Giovanni in their Curl Habit range.
The best natural conditioner for limp and flat hair
After curly hair, limp and flat hair is the next hair type most affected by your choice of conditioner. It’s possible to get the right nourishment for a healthy scalp and healthy hair while only using natural ingredients. Fine hair can easily be flattened down by the wrong natural hair conditioner. 2chic Ultra Volume and Root 66 from Giovanni and Vivacious Volume from Acure Organics are our top picks.
The best natural conditioner for dry hair
Everyone gets split ends. Regular hair cuts will keep them at bay, but for those with dry hair, using the right conditioner with nourishing ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, argan oil and castor oil will keep your hair hydrated and keep the split ends at bay just a little longer. From Giovanni, 2chic Ultra Moist, Hemp Hydrating, Smooth As Silk and Castor Oil will all pair beautifully with their matching shampoos and give you the nourishment you need for each hair shaft. From Acure Organic, Ultra Hydrating is your top choice for dry hair.
What’s the best way to condition your hair naturally?
Even if you choose the right product for your hair type, the way you use it can still make a difference to how your hair looks after your cleansing and conditioning routine.
TIP 1 - put most of the conditioner on the middle and ends of your hair, not on the scalp. We condition our hair to put back some of what shampooing takes away, and that is the natural oils that come from your scalp. Your scalp will do a good job of keeping the hair closest to your head looking its best. Too much conditioner near or on the scalp will just weigh your hair down.
TIP 2 - leaving the conditioner on for as long as you can will give you the best results. Shampoo your hair first thing in the shower and then condition. We certainly don’t advocate long showers, but there’s nothing wrong with adding your conditioner and popping a shower cap on and then getting back in the shower in 10-15 minutes to rinse if your schedule allows. This is probably easier to do in the evening or on the weekends for most people.
TIP 3 - condition more than you shampoo. It might be that you shampoo once a week but you’ll condition your hair twice a week. People with curly hair do this all the time with a cowash. Experiment with frequency and see what works for you. As DIY option, if you have leftover avocado that’s a little too brown to eat, some spare apple cider vinegar or some castor oil, you can experiment with additional treatments in between washes..
