Each year, Klean Kanteen make small adjustments and additions to the design of their whole stainless steel water bottle range. Klean Kanteen Wide bottles come in 2 versions, an insulated and a non-insulated version. In this post we're talking about the non-insulated versions. In 2023, the wide mouth bottles got a redesigned lid. In this blog, learn about the features of the cap and how these bottles differ from the TKWide range, which is the insulated version of the wide bottle, but they both have a completely different thread and the lids are NOT interchangable.

What is the opening size on the Klean Kanteen Wide Water Bottle?

The wide mouth opening on the Klean Kanteen Wide Water Bottle range is 5.4cm. There are times when having a wider mouth on a bottle can be an advantage. Since the bottle was designed for adventure and active people, the opening is generous enough to fill the bottle with ice cubes for chilled drink, to put a water filter inside (either a charcoal stick or adventure sport specific filters for use when you're taking water from a stream) and even use it for some food and snacks. They're easier to clean when they're wide too.

They make a really good bottle to mix protein powders and shakes in for the gym, with plenty of room to get a heaped spoon in through the opening without powder going everywhere.

The new lid design for Klean Kanteen Wide Bottles

Klean Kanteen were the first company in the world to make stainless steel water bottles. While the original classic bottle is the same shape it always was, they have expanded the range and update lids on a regular basis. The old lid for the wide mouth bottles (below) had stainless steel underneath the lid so there's no plastic touching your drink. The new one does too. The plastic loop on top was solid plastic and thick.

The newly designed lid for the wide mouth bottles in 2023 still looks like this underneath but the top is different, and it make the bottle a little shorter all up and it's easier to handle. As you can see in the image below, the top of the lid is flat and there's a stainless steel loop that folds out of the way and then lifts up to carry it. This new design also means that you can use a carabiner and clip it to bags or adventure gear.

How many sizes does the Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Bottle come in?

The non-insulated Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Bottles are available in 3 different sizes. The Klean Kanteen bottles are sized in oz. From left to right in the image at the top of the page you have 64oz (which is just under 2 litres), 40oz (which is just over a litre) and 27oz (which is 800ml).

27oz bottle is 70mm in diameter
40oz bottle is 89mm in diameter
64oz bottle is 110mm in diameter

What's the difference between the Wide Mouth Bottles and the TKWide Bottles?

There are two very distinct differences. The first one is that the wide mouth bottle is a single wall bottle. The TKWide is an insulated water bottle, which means they can retain cold and heat and they're also twice as heavy when empty.
The threads and the lids are different, so they are not interchangeable. The wide mouth have the thread on the outside of the bottle, the TKWide has the thread on the inside. The wide mouth opening on the TKWide is also wider at 6.6cm (the wide mouth is only 5.4cm).
