Early on, concerns were about mainstream floss being coated in teflon instead of wax. As the market evolved, packaging options and the type of thread used for floss became important. Packaging that appears to be plastic is being made from bioplastics and can be composted. Silk floss comes in spools in small glass jars or stainless steel containers with refills available. Biodegradable floss that’s also vegan is now available. A few years ago, it wasn’t.

Silk and plant based threads are compostable but the plant based threads don’t perform as well. Whenever we read reviews, plant based threads break for people more often. The toughest thread is the synthetic thread which you will find on Smart Floss. It is not biodegradable.
