Essential oils can be diffused in the home, used to power home made natural cleaning products and applied topically to the skin (they must always be diluted in a carrier oil first). What are essential oils?

Essential oils are a concentrated form of plant extracts. Sometimes it's the flowers, sometimes the roots or other parts of the plant. The oils can be extracted using a number of methods. Steam distilled or water distilled are common. Certain oils go through cold pressing to extract their oils.

How are essential oils used?

Essential oil use comes down to three main ways - to inhale them, to use them in products for your body, and to use them in products for your home. The safest way to inhale essential oils is with a couple of drops into water in an aroma diffuser. Aromatherapy and inhaling oils stimulates your limbic system which is the section of the brain that controls your emotions, the way you behave, your sense of smell and also your long term memory. They should be used sparingly, only diffusing periodically during the day. Be particularly careful with cooling oils like eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil over extended periods of time.

Essential oils can be used on the skin, but not neat (ie: straight out of the bottle). Skin irritations will occur if they are not properly diluted, whether you have sensitive skin or not. If you wish to wear them as a perfume or during massage, dilute in a carrier oil before use. If you're adding essential oils to pre-formulated skin care, please be mindful that you are altering the formulation to the point where it might split or behave differently, so don't store altered products long term.

What are the most popular essential oils for cleaning?

The third main way essential oils are used is in products used around the home, mainly cleaning products. When I walk down our natural cleaning products aisle in our warehouse, there are a handful of essential oils that jump out that are commonly used in multiple products and brands. Lemon and orange essential oils are commonly used in household cleaners that need to cut through grease, including dishwashing liquid and surface sprays. Tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils are commonly found in disinfectant style products, toilet cleaners and surface cleaners. You will find more floral scents like lavender oil in laundry products for their strong aromatic scent to linger on your bed linen or clothing.

There are some essential oils that are safe to use during pregnancy and some that are not. Clary sage, for example, can cause contractions in the uterus. For this reason it should not be used during pregnancy, but can be very helpful during labour under correct medical supervision.

What's the difference between pure essential oils and essential oil blends?

What we call pure essential oils are a single essential oil in the bottle and nothing else. On rare occasions they may be diluted in a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, but no other essential oils are in the bottle and no synthetic chemicals either. Our eucalyptus essential oil is just that and nothing else. An essential oil blend is multiple pure essential oils blended together in high concentrations either for their fragrance, or for their therapeutic benefits. For example, we have blends to help with mental clarity that contain uplifting essential oils like peppermint, lemon and mandarin. Choosing aromatherapy blends is a lost cost way to have the benefits of multiple essential oils all in one bottle without the expense of buying them individually.
