We had a customer this week ask us about the staying power of our natural lipstick range at Shop Naturally. We did a bit of research and spoke with some experts to find out what their beauty tips are for getting longer lasting wear out of natural and organic lipsticks.

First off, let's set the stage a little. When a natural lipstick is formulated for staying power over all else, the formula can tend to be a little dry to achieve that. Most natural and organic lipsticks are not formulated that way. They are formulated to be healing and nourishing, and as such, will require re-application at some stage during the day, depending on what you're doing with your lips. While we carefully hand pick all our natural makeup in store, it is important to realise that sometimes, when you're comparing a natural product vs a chemical equivalent, certain expectations need to be met when you're only using pure & natural ingredients to achieve your goals.

So, with this in mind, here's our top tips for getting more staying power out of your natural lipstick

  1. Keep your lips well moisturised. You don't need to buy separate products to do this, it can be as simple as using a bit of coconut oil to wash off your lipstick and then applying a little more for moisturiser when you're clean. If you're going to moisturise your lips, do it at bed time, otherwise you'll end up with lips so slick that the colour will slide right off. Ideally, allow a couple of hours between applying the moisturiser and the colour.
  2. Exfoliate the lips once every couple of weeks so you have a smooth surface. Just use your regular face exfoliant or you can DIY with some coconut oil and coconut sugar.
  3. Use a natural or organic lip liner that matches either the colour of your lips (so you only need 1 pencil) or close to the shade of your favourite lipstick. Line your lips and then fill them in with the lip pencil before applying the colour.
  4. Don't just apply your lipstick, set it. Apply, blot with tissue and then apply a translucent powder. Our Translucent Corn Setting Powder from Ere Perez will do the trick nicely.
  5. To plump up the colour even more after step 3, apply a second layer of colour after you set and very lightly blot with tissue.

Doing your lips is one of those simple makeup jobs where you can just do ONE thing to life your whole face without spending too much time doing everything. For a super quick look to even out your skin tone, simply use a BB Cream like our La Mav Organic BB Cream.

This is the old range of lipstick from Inika from a few years back. Now they only do 6 shades - Flushed, Nude Pink, Poppy, Spring Bloom, Soft Coral and Auburn.

Natural Lipstick vs Natural Lip Pencil

We have noticed a trend in natural makeup brands as they shift focus away from using plastic in their packaging that natural lipstick is being replaced by lip crayons in many brands. These natural lip crayon products are a thicker pencil than a traditional eye pencil or lip liner and are softer than a lip liner but just a little firmer than a lipstick. They are made without plastic, give a precision line when sharpened and give longer lasting colour than most lipsticks will. It's not surprising that both Inika Organic and Ere Perez both have a lip crayon range. Ere Perez have discontinued their traditional lipstick line completely. Inika Organic still have both.

Gone are the days where natural makeup companies have 20+ shades of lipstick. These days the ranges are smaller, in more natural pigment tones. Your bright pinks and purples and even hot reds are hard to find in natural brands now.
