Discover the Weleda Collection

Over 100 years of botanical expertise

Weleda was established in Switzerland in 1921 through the work of physician Ita Wegman, philosopher Rudolf Steiner and chemist Oskar Schmiedel. Their early interest in the relationship between plants, people and the natural world shaped the company’s approach to medicinal plant cultivation and botanical formulation. The name Weleda was adopted in 1928.

The first medicinal plant garden was established in the early 1920s, while products including Rosemary Hair Tonic, Arnica Massage Oil and the original Skin Food emerged during the brand’s formative years. Skin Food and Arnica Massage Oil both date to 1926. Today, Weleda products are sold in more than 50 countries, with contemporary skincare and hair care developed alongside these longstanding formulas.

What certified natural skincare means

NATRUE is an independent international standard created specifically for natural and organic cosmetics, and Weleda was one of its founding members in 2007. Natural cosmetic certification sets requirements for ingredient origin and processing. Certified organic cosmetics must meet further requirements for the proportion of ingredients sourced from organic cultivation.

Weleda states that 100% of its skincare products are NATRUE certified and that more than 80% of its plant- and animal-derived raw ingredients come from certified organic cultivation. This doesn’t mean every finished product is certified organic, but it gives customers an independent framework for understanding the brand’s formulation and sourcing standards. Its certified natural skincare avoids mineral oil-derived ingredients, silicones, microplastics and synthetic fragrances.

Botanical skincare for the face

Plants give the collections their individual character. Calendula is closely associated with baby care, wild pansy and chamomile feature in the original Skin Food formula, and wild rose appears in skincare focused on hydration and radiance. Pomegranate and maca peptides feature in firming skincare, while blue gentian and edelweiss distinguish a collection created for mature skin.

Face care extends from cleansers and toners to moisturisers, oils, eye care and targeted serums. Start with the texture and purpose that suit your routine: a lightweight serum can sit beneath a natural moisturiser for the face, while an oil or richer cream can add a more nourishing finish.

Modern serum care

Serum Booster Drops bring a flexible, contemporary format to Weleda’s botanical skincare. Six formulas focus on hydration, pore refinement, glow, omega-rich nourishment, antioxidant care for early visible signs of ageing, or a sun-kissed cosmetic finish. They can be applied directly or mixed with a compatible Weleda moisturiser according to the manufacturer’s recommended method, so you can introduce targeted care without replacing your whole routine.

Skin Food and baby care

The weleda skin food collection has grown from the rich original cream into lighter moisturisers, body care, facial skincare and lip care. Its recognisable botanical family offers several textures while retaining the nourishing character for which the original became known.

Calendula Baby care covers simple cleansing, moisturising and protective steps through washes, creams, lotions and oils. White Mallow provides another baby-care direction, including products developed around particularly sensitive and very dry skin. Formulations vary, so fragrance, vegan status and texture are best considered product by product.

Hair, dental and everyday body care

Weleda’s hair-care heritage continues through rosemary scalp and hair products, Replenish & Care Oat shampoo and conditioner, and Gentle & Mild Millet shampoo. Shampoo cleanses, conditioner adds softness and manageability, and scalp tonics offer an additional targeted step. These certified natural, silicone-free and sulphate-free formulas provide several ways to introduce a natural shampoo to your routine.

Dental care includes mineral and botanical toothpastes with different textures and flavour profiles, including fluoride-free choices in relevant formulations. Across body care, you’ll also find lotions, rich butters, body oils, bath and shower products, deodorants, hand and foot creams, lip care and massage oils. Pregnancy and maternity care centres on moisturising and massage, while men’s grooming includes straightforward face, shaving and deodorant products. Gift sets bring complementary products together without requiring the recipient to commit to a full routine.

Biodiversity and responsible sourcing

Weleda’s botanical focus reaches beyond the finished product. Its medicinal plant gardens include biodynamic cultivation, an agricultural approach concerned with soil fertility, composting and the relationships within the growing environment. The company is also a member of the Union for Ethical BioTrade, reflecting its work with growers, responsible harvesting and biodiversity.

Weleda has been a Certified B Corporation since 2021 and was recertified in 2024. B Corp assesses company-wide practices across areas such as environmental performance, workers, community and governance; it is separate from NATRUE’s product-level cosmetic certification. Together, these credentials help explain how a brand that began with plant gardens and traditional preparations continues to develop modern serums, specialised skincare and contemporary hair care without losing its botanical identity.

Where should I start with Weleda face care?

Begin with a cleanser and moisturiser that match how you like skincare to feel. Once those basics are settled, a serum, facial oil or eye product can add a more targeted step without making the routine unnecessarily complicated.

Which body-care texture should I choose?

Lotions generally spread readily and suit quick application, while creams and body butters provide a richer feel. Body oils work particularly well for massage and can be appealing when you prefer a slower, more tactile moisturising step.

Weleda FAQs

What is Weleda known for?

Weleda is known for certified natural skincare, botanical formulations and more than a century of experience working with medicinal plants. Skin Food and Calendula Baby care are among its most recognisable collections, but the brand also makes facial serums, body care, hair care, oral care, deodorants, pregnancy products and men’s grooming products.

Where is Weleda from, and how long has it been making skincare?

Weleda was founded in Switzerland in 1921 by physician Ita Wegman, philosopher Rudolf Steiner and chemist Oskar Schmiedel. Its origins were shaped by medicinal plant cultivation, botanical preparation methods and anthroposophy. The company has since developed into an international natural skincare and personal care brand while retaining its early interest in plants and cultivation.

Is Weleda skincare certified natural?

Yes. Weleda states that 100% of its skincare products are certified natural under NATRUE. NATRUE is an independent international standard for natural and organic cosmetics, covering matters such as ingredient origin and processing. This product-level certification is separate from Weleda’s company-level B Corp certification.

Is Weleda an organic skincare brand?

Weleda uses a substantial proportion of ingredients from certified organic cultivation, but that doesn’t make every finished product certified organic. The company states that more than 80% of its plant- and animal-derived raw ingredients come from certified organic cultivation. NATRUE distinguishes between certified natural cosmetics and products meeting its additional organic requirements.

Are Weleda products vegan and cruelty-free?

Weleda offers many vegan products, but the complete range isn’t vegan. Some formulas contain beeswax, lanolin or other animal-derived ingredients, so vegan suitability is product specific. Weleda states that it does not test its cosmetics on animals. Product information can help you identify the formulas that match your ingredient and lifestyle preferences.

Getting to Know Weleda Skincare

A large brand range feels much simpler once you focus on how the products work together in real life. These practical pointers can help you build a routine that feels comfortable rather than crowded.

Build around the basics

For facial care, begin with cleansing and moisturising before adding targeted products. A serum usually goes onto clean skin before a cream or oil, allowing you to adjust one part of the routine at a time. If your skin feels drier in particular areas, you can use a richer cream there without necessarily changing every product across your face.

Let texture guide the amount

Weleda offers textures ranging from fluid lotions to dense creams, body butters and oils. A rich cream may only need a modest amount and often benefits from being warmed briefly between the fingertips before application. Lotions spread more quickly over larger areas, while oils are particularly suited to massage and are generally easiest to distribute when the skin is slightly damp.

Add serum care gradually

Targeted serums can complement a routine without replacing the moisturiser you already enjoy. Choose one priority—such as hydration, radiance or additional nourishment—and introduce that formula consistently before adding another. Weleda’s Serum Booster Drops can be used directly or mixed with a compatible moisturiser according to the recommended application method, which makes them easy to adapt to different routines.

Treat hair care as a sequence

Shampoo is primarily for the scalp and roots, while conditioner is usually most useful through the lengths and ends. Concentrating each product where it’s needed can prevent the roots from feeling overloaded while giving drier lengths more care. A scalp tonic is a separate leave-on step rather than a replacement for cleansing or conditioning.

Notice how botanical families differ

Recognising recurring plants can make the range easier to understand: calendula appears throughout baby care, rosemary has a long connection with scalp and hair products, and wild rose, pomegranate and blue gentian characterise different facial collections. The full formula still matters, as supporting ingredients and texture determine how each finished product feels.

Keep oils, balms and concentrated products in good condition

Store skincare away from strong heat and prolonged direct sunlight, especially products rich in plant oils. Use clean, dry hands with jars and balms, and keep water out of concentrated products. These small habits reduce unnecessary contamination and help preserve the texture and aroma throughout normal use.
