We may be winning the war on single use plastic shopping bags at the supermarket with the plastic bag bans and the popularity of reusable shopping bags, but the produce bags in the supermarket are still readily available. Until such time as they are also banned, shoppers will pick them up and use them. Retraining shoppers to not only carry their reusable shopping bags but to also carry reusable produce bags is going to take time. In the interim, all we can do is educate and make them readily available.
Nylon vs Cotton
Ever Eco Reusable Produce Bags are available in 2 different materials. The first one is nylon, which is a synthetic fabric. What it has going for it though is that it's lightweight, ultra durable and made from recycled water bottles. They are making use of a single use item that has been put in to the recycling system to be made in to something else. And it has been.
Cotton is a natural fibre so it goes through far less processing, but cotton does use a lot of water in the growing process. The cotton produce bags won't be as durable, especially the cotton mesh bags, and cotton is heavier. The mesh cotton bags are still relatively lightweight, but the solid cotton bags are not.
Both options are easy to wash and dry. The nylon produce bags come in a nylon pouch with a drawstring and carabiner so you can clip them on to jeans loop or handbag
Mesh vs Solid Fabric
Mesh bags are available in both fabrics. The nylon is tougher and more durable and weighs a little less. In the grand scheme of things, there's not a whole lot of difference in the weight so that shouldn't play a factor. The solid fabric cotton bags are not specifically suited for fresh fruit & veg as they're heavier and should be tared before your produce gets weighed. Where they shine though is at bulk food stores for legumes, rice, grains, nuts and even flour. They are the perfect reusable bulk food bags.
