I was horrified earlier this evening to see a major supermarket brand of hair products buying an ad on Google for the words natural hair shampoo with a cleverly worded ad saying to ‘look at our range for your natural hair’. Ummm, we all have NATURAL hair, what we want to find, when Googling for natural hair shampoo is something that’s chemical free that contains no SLS. Your products do not fit that bill.

Rest assured, every hair product in our store is natural and is SLS Free. While we stock a wide variety of natural hair products, not all of them are certified organic or contain organic ingredients. If you’re looking for organic hair products, check the Mukti range. As well as an organic shampoo and conditioner, Mukti also have a range of good quality organic skin care.

The Dr Organic range contain a combination of organic ingredients and natural ingredients and come in 9 different varieties to suit different ages & hair types.

Billie Goat Soap have a natural shampoo & conditioner based on goats milk, suitable for all hair types, but suits people with sensitive and dry skin in particular.

Giovanni hair products have one of the most extensive range on the market and include a variety of shampoo & conditioners and our biggest range of natural hair styling products and natural hair treatment products. This brand is a very affordable salon quality range and is a great seller for us. A new range based on Moroccan oil will be arriving in our store very soon.

For those on a budget, our most affordable brand is the Everyday Shea in 3 fragrances with matching body wash and lotion available. Just $19.95 for 900ml (price subject to change from dates after this post. Please check the products in our store for the latest pricing.).

One of the more well known brands is the Alchemy hair products range. We stock the 500ml size range along with their 2 treatment products. The smaller sizes aren’t as good value for money, so we only stock the larger sizes.

The makers of Nutella have agreed to a class action settlement for payments of $4 a jar up to 5 jars per person because their advertising makes it appear it’s a healthy choice for kids. What the Nutella TV Commercial HERE and decide for yourself. With a $2.5 million payout to be divided among the claimants, that’s 125,000 people getting $20 back! One would think that it’s going to cost them that much again in the hassles of processing the payments. A giant ‘sucked in’ to the makers of Nutella for neglecting to mention the lashings of sugar in their product in their advertising.

Want a healthy alternative to Nutella?

Try our Cocopure Nut Butters. They’re stone ground from natural ingredients and don’t contain any sugars or artificial colours or flavours. They’re based on coconut butter which is great for your health. Our nut butters can be spread on toast, bikkies, cake or anywhere you like. They can be used in cooking, and if you desire, can be eaten out of the jar with a spoon or your finger (isn’t that the best way?)

This morning, Dick Smith was on Sunrise talking about tinned beetroot. Not a hugely exciting topic on the surface, but the story makes my blood boil.

In Australia, it costs approx. 90 cents to produce a can of beetroot. Aldi, in their infinite wisdom of only giving a hoot about prices and not the state of the workers who produce the food, have dropped the price of tinned beetroot to 75 cents. What’s the roll on effect of this?

On the surface, you may think it just means that the aussie hamburger is a little bit cheaper. But what it actually means is that in these ‘supermarket wars’, Coles & Woolworths have dropped their prices too. So what happens when the majors sell beetroot for less than it costs to produce in Australia? Well, it’s simple really. Aussie beet farmers go broke and we all start eating chemically laden imported food from China.

The cost of buying cheap imported food from Aldi isn’t a saving of 75 cents so you can buy an extra packet of biscuits or a chocolate treat for your kids, it’s ruining Australian jobs, the Australian economy and introducing ‘who knows what’ kind of chemical cocktail in to our food.

Dick Smith actually bought an entire crop from one farmer to save him from going under (around $100,000 worth), tinned it up and tried to sell it to Coles & Woolworths. Their answer was simple “Dick, we have to sell beetroot for 75 cents, so we can’t buy it off you for 90 cents. This morning, Dick Smith is down at Manly giving away $100,000 worth of beetroot in protest.

My protest is simple, to NEVER buy food from Aldi, to NEVER buy imported food when there’s a local version available. I value Australia jobs, the Australian economy and most importantly, my health.

I understand that families are struggling, and that having access to affordable food is important, but beetroot isn’t a staple food like bread or milk, it’s an item that could very simply and easily be omitted from a shopping trolley without any major impact. The snowball effect of buying it at 75 cents however, is massive.

If you want to support Dick, visit the Dick Smith Foods store and buy some good old fashioned Australian produce that the majors won’t touch on price or just pick up a can of Beetroot that’s produced in Australia instead.

I know we sell a lot of products manufactured in China, our water bottles for example, but these products aren’t produced anywhere else so the only option we have is to choose ethical companies who monitor quality control and not sell cheap rubbish. There is, however, no need for Australia to be importing beetroot from China, and this trend MUST STOP.

Yes, it’s only America and not in Australia, but it’s a small step in the right direction. By the end of March 2012, the USA Food & Drug Administration are going to make a decision on whether to ban BPA in food packaging.

In Australia, finding clearly labeled BPA Free baby bottles, water bottles, lunch boxes and food containers is becoming easier, but food packaging, especially tinned food, is non-existent.

Studies show that 90% of Americans have Bisphenol A in their urine and the government is going to be spending $30 million to study the effects of BPA on people. BPA is found in approx. 10% of Tupperware, but not in the kids products. A safer quality brands to choose over Tupperware is Lock & Lock and budget ranges like Decor can be found in most supermarkets.

We will be launching a range of BPA Free tinned food from Spiral Foods shortly, but everyone’s life would be a lot easier if you could pick up anything in the supermarket and know you weren’t being exposed to a potentially hormone altering chemical.

Read more on the Plastics Today website.

New this week, the Joseph Joseph Nest range.

Woohoo. The news we’ve been waiting for, one of the major tinned food suppliers has caved to the pressure of parents and advocacy groups and has announced it’s going BPA Free. There doesn’t appear to be any time line in place, so don’t hold your breath, but I think we’re at the beginning of the food industry self regulating itself like the baby bottle industry did and removing BPA from their packaging & products automatically.

You’re hard pressed to find baby bottles in Australia with BPA in them anymore, but when it comes to water bottles and food containers, you still need to check before you buy.
